Terez Montcalm: a fusion singer.

Not just rock, not just soul and blues, not just jazz: Terez (Thérèse!) Montcalm, dubbed “the rockiest of jazz singers” or even “the most soulful of rock singers”, is a little bit of all of the above.

Now in her sixties, the Quebec singer, with her husky, harsh and bewitching timbre, takes us on a journey through time and tributes with “Step Out“.

Admirably surrounded by Jean-Marie Ecay (guitar), Laurent Vernerey (bass) and Nicolas Viccaro (drums), she plunges back into the past, reinvents, takes up and gives a new reading to a repertoire of yesteryear where Holland/Dozier/Holland collide in a jumble, in an adaptation by Vline Buggy “Reach Out I’ll Be There” by Four Top, now known as “J’attendrai” by Claude François), Gil Scott-Heron (“Lay Day and John Coltrane“) or Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick, “Don’t Make Me Over“, now known as “T’en va pas comme ça” by Nancy Holloway and his own compositions.

These, like the covers, are marked by a certain power and muscular drive in the word and use of the voice.

On closer listening, it becomes clear that the Canadian singer/guitarist loves above all to blur musical lines and distill good vibrations through her choices of re-appropriating standards and energetic personal work.
