Marc-André Hamelin

Marc-André Hamelin – In a State of Jazz (Hyperion, 2008).

Marc-André Hamelin was born in Montreal in 1961. With an iron will, He is always invested completely in his Art. Today, Hamelin lives in Boston and He is universally recognized. The musicians who choose the classical world for a carreer usually stay in the right way. When a musician jumps the fence and improvises himself as a musician of jazz, the music lovers do not have really waitings. If the musicians surprise, it’s so much fun. If it is not the case, it’s not so much important.

In the past, the pianist and orchestra conductor André Prévin made some incursion into the jazz. He’s not the only one. Throughout his career the pianist Friedrich Gulda courted the world of the jazz while joining at some times the jazz pianist Chick Corea.

In 2008, the pianist Marc-André Hamelin also made a temporary entrance in the world of the jazz with an album of the name of “In A State of Jazz”. Hamelin is honest, it acknowledges clearly that he is not a musician of jazz. He even repeated, in interviews, that there was no improvisation in “In has State of Jazz”. All is written!

With its very thorough direction of the analysis of the partitions, it highlights what is beautiful in the music. In this program offered by Hamelin, there are compositions of Nikolai Kapustin and popular arrangements by Alexis Weissenberg. Being inspired mainly by the splendid compositions of Gulda (Play Play Piano), Hamelin takes possession of the keyboard with insurance and confidence. Its fingers floats on the keyboard at a confusing speed, He takes the notes with vertiginous rises and descents. While becoming acquainted with the Sonata No 2 of Kapustin, you will understand what I mean. I acknowledge it to you, there is many information to digest, but when they are understanding, the evening is worth it.

The music lovers jazz often have the open spirit and they know when an adventure is worth the turning. In this case, I believe that this adventure is a gift not to be neglected. Good listening!

In a State of Jazz». In a State of Jazz».
