What, to you, is the ultimate form of musical misery?
Having immense talent and astonishing instrumental ease, only to squander them on ambition and bad taste. In other words, playing the most dreadful stuff imaginable and not even realizing it. Plenty of examples come to mind, but one springs immediately to mind…

Your idea of earthly happiness?
No kings.
Which wrong notes are you most forgiving of?
The next one.

Who is your favourite classical composer?
Impossible to answer. Perhaps Mahler had finally found the answer on his deathbed, since his last words were: “MOZART! MOZART!”
Your favourite heroines or divas in real life?
Nurses, in general. Especially those in A&E, at the beginning of the journey, and those in palliative care, at the end.
Your heroines in fiction?
Marlene in The Juniper Tree.
Your favourite painter?
My children, when they were around ten years old.
Your favourite jazz musician?
Frédéric Chopin.

A sense of humour.
Your favourite quality in a woman?
A sense of humour, even more so than in a man…

The combination of talent and hard work.
Your favourite occupation?
Not waiting around.
The main trait of your character?
Impatience.
What do you most appreciate in your friends?
Patience.
Your main fault?
Impatience.
What would you like to be?
Better.
Your favourite colour?
D major.
Your favourite flower?
The first one a child manages to draw.
Your favourite bird?
The one that helps the shepherdess and the chimney sweep stand up to the King.

What do you detest above all else?
The overuse of superlatives, which puts me in something of a bind…
The reform you admire most?
All those that the far right keeps trying to roll back… The abolition of the death penalty above all.
What gift of nature would you most like to possess?
Anner Bylsma’s right hand.
How would you like to die?
Let’s quote Brassens: “All things considered, I’d rather do without a grave. I’d rather die in water, in fire, anywhere at all. And even, if push came to shove, not die at all.”
Your definition of jazz?
It wasn’t me who came up with it, but someone once said: “When you don’t know what it is, that’s jazz!” I rather like that as a definition.
The present state of my mind?
At last, to enjoy life… for as long as possible.
Your motto?
Think sceptically, act optimistically… Never the other way round.
Your signature tune?
Alone in The Fast Lane – album “Line For Lions” novembre 2025 – Label La Buissonne.
