With more than a decade of existence and seven albums to their credit, including this latest release, the Israeli trio Shalosh stands out as a veteran among the young groups that have emerged in the wake of the late EST trio.
On this new CD, which combines original collective compositions with covers of rock and pop themes, the three musicians of Shalosh assert an identity that blends a clearly jazz approach, among other things through the importance given to improvisation, classical and pop influences, and an energy often close to rock.
Gadi Stern‘s piano playing is magnificent, whether he is delivering earthy tones in the lower register of the instrument, subtle chords, or refined arpeggios in the upper register.
The woody timbre of David Michaeli‘s double bass works wonders in accompanying the piano with a choice of notes that is always relevant.
As for Matan Assayag‘s drums, they alternate between binary and ternary rhythms with the utmost efficiency or finesse. But beyond the individual qualities of its members, Shalosh offers a totally original group sound, a sound developed by the three of them, which explains why the trio chose to present themselves under a collective name.
It is therefore with great pleasure that we follow the contrasting musical journey offered by this new album from a trio that has established its identity through numerous concerts and which Parisians have been able to hear live at the New Morning on April 21.
Line up:
