Michael Wollny, the “humble piano star” according to our colleagues from Main Post, is “one of the few German jazz musicians to break into the pop charts” (Der Spiegel).
His new album, Living Ghosts, released on February 28, 2025, by the ACT Music label, will be presented in Paris for the first time on November 15, alongside his longtime collaborators, Tim Lefebvre on double bass and Eric Schaefer on drums.
Michael Wollny, a multi-award-winning artist—and especially on an international level—is an elusive yet undeniable phenomenon straddling jazz and classical music, between Nick Cave, Schubert, and Heinrich Heine, between improvisation and composition.
He has performed with the crème de la crème of the jazz world: Vincent Peirani, Emile Parisien, Joachim Kühn, and Pierre-Laurent Aimard.
The trio that will perform on that evening is regarded as “one of the greatest jazz trios,” according to The Guardian, and even as “the most exciting trio in the world,” according to Die Zeit.
Michael Wollny has been repeatedly celebrated here, for example in this article by Francis Capeau.
Thus, Couleurs Jazz has been talking about him for several years, as in this piece by Frédéric Charbaut from 2014:
Or the article by Christian Grimauld during his appearance at Jazz à Ramatuelle in 2019.
Regarding the immense talent (not sufficiently recognized in France) of the musicians from beyond the Rhine, read the l’excellent documentary by Thierry Quenum.
NB: Most of Michael Wollny‘s albums are regularly broadcast on Couleurs Jazz Radio.
