If the sheer number of strings to his bow and technical virtuosity were enough, the Manouche angels would already have descended upon guitarist Gwen Cahue.
But that extra spark of soul also runs through his cross-border jazz compositions, which weave together Django’s legacy, inventive reinterpretations of standards, and performances that brush up against the classical realm.
This is his fifth album. Following several already acclaimed releases, Gwen Cahue, entirely on acoustic guitar and exploring a range of rhythmic approaches, spins his web of strings through diverse inspirations, a sign of a fully matured guitar language. A rising star of French gypsy jazz, to which his Breton roots did not necessarily predestine him, his many encounters within the genre have shaped a musical writing that draws from tradition without ever being confined by it.
This is evident in his bold and masterful reworkings of The Peacock by Jimmy Rowles and In Walked Bud by Thelonious Monk, performed here with the restraint that suits the instrument’s acoustic nature. There is also Stochelo Express, a tribute to guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg, played in the Manouche style yet with a melodic, almost vocal tone, a kind of genre fusion whose inventive blend reveals both adaptability and compositional freedom.
A clear, decisive attack, razor-sharp phrasing, and precision of execution are all driven forward by the energetic support of his fellow musicians (Body and Soul), alongside journeys to the edges of jazz (Temps Calme) and explorations of harmonic textures (Échos du Large). The result is a broad instrumental palette that bridges the classical literature of the instrument with jazz’s more winding, off-road paths. Tradition within eclecticism, or perhaps the other way around.
In any case, this is an album of great musical generosity, one that transcends sheer technical mastery through refined ingenuity and a freedom of tone, in every sense of the word, that speaks to genuine artistic creation.
