As part of the Sunset’s “Hors les Murs” concert series, guitarists Stochelo Rosenberg and his younger brother Mozes Rosenberg, accompanied by double bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky, took to the stage at the Studio Raspail, a charming venue with superb acoustics.

For us, it was a chance to hear live the music featured on Hit Couleurs Jazz and Best of the Month, from the Label Ouest, both previously spotlighted in these pages.

For nearly an hour and a half, before an enthusiastic audience firmly on their side, these three virtuosos explored the Chaplin Project, with highlights including Sephora, dedicated to Stochelo and Mozes’s sister; Michael Swing, for Michael Chaplin; Gipsy, a theme from The Great Dictator; Blues Minor; Mozology, a nod to Djangology; Smile, Charlie Chaplin’s celebrated 1936 composition for his film Modern Times; and Funky Chaplin.

Here are a few highlights from the concert in this video. (Click on the image to watch).

Line Up:

Stochelo Rosenberg – Guitar

A leading figure in Gypsy jazz, Dutch guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg (born in 1968 into the Sinti community) has become one of the genre’s most iconic voices. With his cousins Nous’che and Nonnie, he helped spearhead its revival through the Rosenberg Trio. His appearance alongside Stéphane Grappelli at Carnegie Hall in 1993 marked a major international breakthrough. Prestigious collaborations followed, from Toots Thielemans to Biréli Lagrène, Didier Lockwood and Tommy Emmanuel. He also composed the soundtrack for Étienne Comar’s 2017 film Django. His signature blend of effortless virtuosity, distinctive vibrato and exquisite melodic finesse has made him a standout guitarist.

Mozes Rosenberg – Guitar

Stochelo’s younger brother, Mozes grew up in a family where the guitar is practically a mother tongue. He began playing at six and appeared on Dutch television with the Rosenberg Trio at just seven. Drawing on his family’s musical heritage as well as influences such as Paco de Lucía and George Benson, he has developed a sharp, virtuosic style with irresistible groove. From major international festivals to celebrated clubs such as Ronnie Scott’s in London and Le Duc des Lombards in Paris, he has established himself as a formidable soloist. His musical rapport with Stochelo borders on the telepathic.

Matheus Nicolaiewsky – Double Bass

Brazilian double bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky is one of the notable talents of his generation, combining a solid grounding in jazz tradition with an international outlook. Based in the Netherlands since 2011, he studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and Codarts Rotterdam Jazz Academy before becoming a highly sought-after sideman and soloist on the European and international scenes. His collaborators include leading guitarists Stochelo Rosenberg, Peter Bernstein and Yotam Silberstein. With the latter, he recorded Volume 1, released in 2025 on PIAS / Bop Web Records.
