Pierrick Pédron Quartet «The Shape of Jazz to Come (or Something Else)» – December 17, 2024 at La Passerelle, national stage of St-Brieuc.
It was essential for Pierrick Pédron to come back to his homeland to present his 12th project as leader to “his Breton family”.
It is at La Passerelle, national Theater of St-Brieuc, (Brittany) a few yards away from his ily birthplace, in the magnificent little Italian-style theater, on December 17, 2024, that the artist performed in the company of his trio of exceptional musicians: Carl-Henri Morisset on piano, Thomas Bramerie on double bass and Elie Martin-Charrière on drums.
Pierrick Pédron took the time to explain the genesis of Ornette Coleman’s legendary album.
The quartet’s aim was not to give their own interpretation, but to draw inspiration from it and move towards something else. “But we didn’t know what, or where, or if we’d get there,” confides Pierrick Pedron.
Daniel Yvinec’s artistic direction and Laurent Courthaliac’s arrangements also contributed to the project’s success. (Do read DidierPennequin’s paper) about the album’s released.
A year after a week’s residency in the same little theater to mature and elaborate this music, it was only natural that the quartet should return here following the release of the recording, the leader’s first with this formation.
Neither avatar nor artifact, this is the quartet’s own expression, inspired by Ornette’s approach.
In this concert, Pierrick Pédron takes pride of place, with his superbly mastered saxophone sound, at times lyrical and silky, at others daring and daring. He’s arguably at the top of his game, but he could still surprise us in the future by going even higher.
The three accomplices are never outdone, and play a full part in this success. Thomas Bramerie‘s virtuosity and talent are well known. The two “youngsters” are in tune, making this intergenerational quartet a musical must. Carl-Henri Morisset is just phenomenal!
Last but not least, the complicity between the 4 musicians is obvious.
Keep an eye on the quartet’s tour, and if it comes to your neck of the woods, book your tickets now!
