Listening to the opening piece on Spark of Life, it’s hard not to associate Marcin Wasilewski’sstyle (all appoggiatura) with the most sensitive of American princes – accentuated by the ECM label’s sound esthetic. “Austin” is a moving tribute to the amazing pianist Austin Perralta from California, who died last year at age 22.
Like the album cover, depicting aflock of birds against a cloudy sky, Spark of Life is a minimalist recording, airy, at the heart of the European jazz tradition. After touring with trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, Marcin Wasilewski has established himself as one of the most subtle pianists of the Old Continent. A dynamic and crystalline sound for a quartet that at times evokes Jan Garbarek’s, with an eclectic repertoire, fromKrzysztof Komeda to Herbie Hancock by way of Sting. An album to put under the Christmas tree.

Ex-compagnon de route du trompettiste Tomasz Stanko, Marcin Wasilewski s’impose comme l’un des pianistes les plus subtils du Vieux Continent. Un son dynamique et cristallin au service d’un quartet évoquant par moment celui de Jan Garbarek et parcourant un répertoire éclectique, de Krysztof Komeda à Herbie Hancock en passant par Sting. Un album à mettre sous le sapin.
