Born in Bakou in 1982, Emil Afrasiyab is a major leading artist of the young jazz generation from Azerbaijan. Like his musicians, the pianist is mixing jazz mugham coming from traditional Azeri music, in his composition, where improvisation prevails. His specific skills have always been punctuated by the opposition between the intonation, and the different harmonies and rhythm existing in classical music and jazz. Since he created his own band in 2002, his reputation grew beyond his native country. In 2011, he is awarded the Audience Prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and graduated with honors from the famous Berkeley University of music in 2012. After the success of Isfar Sarabski’s concert in 2014, the Festival is happy to make you discover this new Azeri talent.

Emil Afrasiyab Quartet

Né en 1982 à Bakou, Emil Afrasiyab est un artiste majeur et un des leaders de la jeune génération jazz azerbaïdjanaise. Et à l’instar de ces musiciens, le pianiste mêle dans ses compositions le jazz au mugham, issu de la musique traditionnelle azérie et où l’improvisation prédomine. Son jeu très particulier a toujours été marqué par les contrastes d’intonation, les fluctuations harmoniques et rythmiques existantes entre la musique classique et le jazz. Depuis la création de son propre groupe en 2002, sa réputation a franchi les frontières de son pays natal. En 2011, il reçoit le prix du public au Montreux Jazz Festival, et en 2012 il est diplômé avec les félicitations de la célèbre université de musique de Berkeley. Après le succès du concert d’Isfar Sarabski en 2014, le Festival est heureux de vous faire découvrir un nouveau talent azéri.
