Korean flutist Yoorim Won offers us music that is both luminous and intense.

This is primarily due to the sound of her flutes, which are alternately sunny and dreamy, sometimes replaced by her singing or by the taepyeongso, a Korean oboe.

In the title of one of the themes of her composition, Yoorim Won alludes to John Coltrane, and indeed we can feel the influence—more in spirit than in letter—of the American saxophonist in the musician’s inspired playing. In other words, this music, which combines arranged traditional tunes and original compositions, immediately captivates the listener through the instrumentalists’ commitment to the creative act.

Indeed, the leader is surrounded by a trio that is totally devoted to her cause and provides her with first-rate accompaniment.

Won is also a remarkable soloist, and her phrasing constantly holds the listener’s attention, both on lively themes and on quieter pieces. This music, both melodious and danceable, flows with total ease and exudes a charm that is difficult to resist. It is a true revelation.
