Sylvain Ransy : Fingerprint
On this second album as bandleader, Guadeloupean pianist Sylvain Ransy presents twelve original compositions that paint a landscape of contrasts, dominated by a love of melody and dance. The result is deeply joyful music, enriched by guest appearances from two vocalists, a guitarist, and a saxophonist on four tracks. But the heart of this album lies in the trio, and here Ransy displays a radiant musicality, with his touch and luminous phrasing telling beautiful stories track after track. Zacharie Abraham on double bass and Arnaud Dolmen on drums provide magnificent support, and the drummer plays a role that is as melodic as it is rhythmic, drawing singing tones from his instrument with great skill. The leader’s compositions blend Caribbean influences with the vigor of a jazz style where swing reigns supreme, and his improvisations showcase a fertile melodic and rhythmic imagination. It comes as no surprise that the pianist acknowledges two mentors—his elders Alain Jean-Marie and Mario Canonge—for it is clear that Ransy follows in the footsteps of his Caribbean predecessors while adding his own personal touch. This album confirms the talent of a musician whose career we will be delighted to follow, one that already shows great promise.
