I had seen this major trio in concert at the D’Jazz festival in Nevers a few days before they went into the studio to record this CD.

And I must say, I couldn’t wait to hear them again on record, as the magic of the live show had left such a strong impression on me.

And indeed, the recording by Vincent Mahey – the sound engineer who followed them on tour – perfectly captures the poetic atmosphere of this summit meeting of three first-rate musicians.

A very special alchemy unfolds between these three, and even if the pianist composes most of the repertoire, it’s the three musicians who bring it to life with the specificity of their individual sound.

In fact, Mark Helias‘ double bass and Eric McPherson‘s drums have a unique sound signature that blends perfectly with the splendid timbre of the leader’s piano.

Sophia Domancich‘s qualities have been well known for ages: a touch of rare sensitivity, a phrasing that offers many rhythmic surprises, a refined harmonic science…

Mark Helias, both pizzicato and bowed, is one of the most eminent double bassists in the world’s jazzosphere, and his constantly inventive playing is particularly highlighted in this trio. As for Eric McPherson, he’s one of the most subtle drummers I know, and his toms and cymbals are remarkably musical, constantly seeking to enrich the themes both rhythmically – where he too cultivates the art of surprise – and melodically.

In a context where piano/bass/drums trios abound, Sophia Domancich‘s trio has no trouble asserting its singularity, and is clearly at the top of this type of formation. To be listened to again and again without moderation!

Line up:
