To bring something new to the crowded piano/bass/drums format is no small feat, and that’s exactly what Levi Harvey has achieved on this debut album under his own name.
The compositions, penned by the bandleader, exude a refreshing vitality and are brought to life by a sensitive and luminous piano touch combined with phrasing that is both invigorating and fluid.
This pianist knows how to approach the instrument from its cantabile side; his right hand weaves voluptuous or playful melodies, while his left explores the harmonies with a constant focus on clarity and an impressive rhythmic foundation on the up-tempo tracks.
Harvey is accompanied by Cyril Drapé, a double bassist of remarkable solidity and depth, which can be appreciated, among other things, in his beautifully crafted solos.
Pierre-Eden Guilbaud, the drummer, energizes his bandmates with a rich and subtle polyrhythm.
Here, then, is a young trio that immediately asserts an undeniable personal identity and evident maturity. We can’t wait to hear them live, where they are sure to delight audiences who, in the meantime, can treat themselves to this highly promising debut album.
