Latvian vibraphonist Jānis Fedotovs offers us a music that is both playful and sophisticated. The compositions, all penned by him, showcase the superb sound of his instrument, which, whether on percussive pieces or more dreamy themes—including one solo piece—displays a personality of its own, one of great elegance. There are not many jazz vibraphonists, nor are there many instrumentalists from Latvia.
Fedotovs is therefore an original musician in two respects. Based in France for several years now, he has surrounded himself with partners who share his vision of sensitive and playful jazz.
Clément Merienne‘s piano provides the leader with unfailing harmonic support and offers flavorful improvisations in which his luminous tone shines.
Etienne Renard‘s double bass is consistently relevant in its accompaniment and, here again, its sound is first-rate.
As for Elie Martin-Charrière‘s drums, they alternate between finesse and density in a richly varied performance.
It is therefore the coming together of four musicians with strong personalities that characterizes this album, and the obvious compatibility that connects them makes this first opus a total success, leaving us eagerly awaiting the best for the rest of their adventures.
Line up:
Jānis Fedotovs: vibraphone
Clément Merienne: piano
Etienne Renard: double bass
Elie Martin-Charrière: drums
