A luxury cast for an album with a memorable repertoire. For Dmitry Baevsky’s new opus, his eleventh as leader, he had to deliver top-flight jazz.
What better way for the alto saxophonist from St. Petersburg, Russia, to record Roller Coaster – a little phonographic gem in which imperishable standards meet personal compositions – than to bring together the finest jazz “made in New York City”?
Headlining the quartet is Peter Bernstein, an excellent guitarist (too underestimated in France!) whose magical strings and instrumental musicality have already marked the paths of several generations of jazzmen, from Sonny Rollins to Brad Mehldau via Diana Krall and, more recently, that of a rising piano star, Sullivan Fortner, recently nominated in the “Grand prix de l’Académie du jazz 2024 (best record of the year)” category in France.
And to complete the quartet, two very promising sidemen in the shape of double bassist David Wong and drummer Jason Brown, both of whom have prestigious names on their calling cards.
As for Dmitry Baevsky, his immense musical culture has made him an alto saxophonist and composer who has assimilated everything from his greatest alter egos, from Charlie Parker to contemporary heralds such as “Cannonball” Adderley, Art Pepper, Jackie McLean and even Marion Brown, to conceive his own instrumental universe.
And for this luxury 4tet, an ad hoc repertoire was needed.
Benny Golson (who recently passed away at the age of 95), Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Tommy Flanagan and Grant Green formed the backbone of the concept, along with a number of personal compositions. A choice of titles that perfectly matches the lyricism and melodic sense of the full band, as well as the exchanges between the co-leaders with their unbridled and inspiring imagination.
A jazzy “rollercoaster” that triggers a host of emotions and thrills!
