A pianist with a strong presence on the French jazz scene – and who once lived and played in New York for several years – Laurent Coq has in fact only recorded three times as a trio, including the session that resulted in these beautiful “Confidences“.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that Coq is whispering secrets in our ears.
The pianist from Marseilles, now in his fifties, shares his secrets (among others), for a start, with a magnificent rhythm section totally committed to his cause: Yoni Zelnik on double bass and Fred Pasqua on drums, clearly the top of the Parisian jazzosphere.
In addition, Coq unveils a number of personal compositions that he has had to keep hidden for so long, since he hadn’t set foot in a recording studio for some years.
Years of reflection, maturation and questioning have given him the self-confidence to once again position himself in the rather crowded piano trio niche, and to do so with remarkable assurance and a repertoire of diversity and sincerity that immediately wins over the listener. Coq is both a great lyricist and a musician who is rigorous (without being stiff) in his approach to both piano and trio.
He entrusts his two partners with a leading role, turning the trio into a perfectly equilateral triangle in which each brings his own voice to a music that is frequently cantabile and impressively rich in harmony and melody.
Laurent Coq does not seek to imitate or distinguish himself from the other piano trios that abound on the planet. He doesn’t need to, so rich and eminently personal is his inner world and his art of sharing.
The result is a perfectly convincing CD of enduring beauty and charm.
To be listened to again and again without moderation!
