For Three Times Three, the American drummer has surrounded himself with bassists Christian McBride, John Patitucci and Matt Brewer, guitarist John Scofield, saxophonist Joe Lovano and undisputed genius Brad Mehldau. In fact, what you remember of the album’s 85 minutes are the first three tracks on which he improvises. As usual, the star pianistdazzles with his melodic intelligence, his explosiveness and his unique phrasing, instantly recognizable: his personality is so strong he quickly steals the show from the alleged leader. Certainly, Sanchez is inventive and accompanies with gusto, with a masterfulenergy, but the music we discover here is above all Mehldau’s, once again showing him to be the most significant figure in contemporary jazz.

D’ailleurs, tout ce qu’on retient de ces 85 minutes d’enregistrement sont les trois premiers titres sur lesquels celui-ci improvise. Comme à son habitude, le pianiste-star brille par son intelligence mélodique, par sa fulgurance et par son phrasé unique, instantanément reconnaissable : sa personnalité est si forte qu’il vole rapidement la vedette au leader supposé. Certes, Sanchez compose et accompagne avec brio, avec une énergie magistrale, mais la musique qu’on découvre ici reste avant tout celle de Mehldau qui, encore une fois, s’érige comme la figure la plus incontournable du jazz contemporain.
