Pendant le confinement il avait concoct\u00e9 tout seul, jouant de tous les instruments en re-recording, un superbe et surprenant \u00ab\u00a0<em>There is a Tide<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, (toujours \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9coute sur <strong>Couleurs Jazz Radio).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Ses deux autres disques en trio ou quartet plus ou moins \u00e9lectriques m\u2019avaient moins plu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Et voici que <strong>Potter<\/strong> revient au quartet acoustique, et en public au fameux <em>Village Vanguard<\/em> de New York de surcro\u00eet. C\u2019est la troisi\u00e8me fois que le saxophoniste investit le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre club de Manhattan. Les fois pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes avaient produit, en 2004, l\u2019album \u00ab\u00a0<em>Lift<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb et en 2007 \u00ab\u00a0<em>Follow the Red Line<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, tous deux sur le label Sunnyside de l\u2019excellent producteur basque \u00e9tabli aux USA Fran\u00e7ois Zalacain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sur ce nouveau CD, le vingt-troisi\u00e8me sous son nom depuis 1994, <strong>Potter<\/strong> a fait appel \u00e0 deux partenaires qu\u2019il c\u00f4toie de longue date, le pianiste <strong>Craig Taborn<\/strong> et le bassiste <strong>Scott Colley\u00a0<\/strong>: des pointures incontournables de la sc\u00e8ne newyorkaise. Le \u00ab\u00a0petit nouveau\u00a0\u00bb ici est le batteur <strong>Marcus Gilmore<\/strong>, le petit-fils du grand Roy Haynes qui est devenu lui aussi un sideman recherch\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">C\u2019est donc un concert totalement acoustique et live que nous propose <strong>Potter<\/strong> et on a fortement l\u2019impression qu\u2019il s\u2019y inspire de glorieux pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs sur la sc\u00e8ne du Vanguard, entre autres Sonny Rollins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Que dire sur ce jeune quinquag\u00e9naire qui n\u2019ait pas d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 dit au cours d\u2019une carri\u00e8re de pr\u00e8s de trente ans en sideman de luxe et en leader\u00a0?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Que sur ce dernier opus il revient aux fondamentaux en se limitant \u00e0 l\u2019utilisation du sax t\u00e9nor et en renon\u00e7ant \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">C\u2019est donc un <strong>Potter<\/strong> d\u2019un classicisme assum\u00e9 que nous entendons ici et il est clair que sa ma\u00eetrise instrumentale et ses talents d\u2019improvisateur le mettent globalement \u00e0 l\u2019abri de la concurrence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Un ma\u00eetre, <strong>Potter<\/strong>\u00a0?
